What is Blackjack?

Blackjack (also known as Twenty-One) is a popular card game consisting of 52 playing cards dealt to each player with two or more cards, and the objective is for each player to have a total point value of the cards in hand as close to 21 points as possible.

The game is commonly played during Tet holidays organized by bookmakers (house owners), with the number of players usually ranging from 3-5 people.

Playing blackjack requires 3-5 players to be sufficient.

Some terms of the card game Blackjack

It is advisable for players to familiarize themselves with the terms used in blackjack before playing.

Note: These terms are specific to Blackjack, while terms for other variations will be covered in a separate article.

  • House: One or a group of individuals who run a gambling establishment and are responsible for paying out winnings to players and collecting money when players lose.
  • Player: Individuals participating in the gambling establishment.
  • Judge: The house has the right to judge whether to accept or reject the cards of any player participating in the game.
  • Draw: The house will go around for everyone to draw cards, each time you draw, you will get 1 card and the maximum total you can draw is not more than 3 (the maximum total cards in hand will be 5).
  • Tie: When players have equal points, it is called a tie in Blackjack.
  • Deal: Drawing cards.
  • Stand: Refusing to draw cards anymore (You feel you have enough points you need). At the draw round, if you already have 2 good cards, you don’t need to draw anymore (you can also bluff the dealer).
  • Age requirement: Players must be at least 16 years old to play, while the dealer must be 15 years old.
  • Underage: Players under 16 and dealers under 15 are not allowed to play.
  • Bluffing: If a player or dealer has a total score below 18 when revealing cards, it’s called bluffing because players don’t need to be 21 to reveal cards.
  • Splitting money: After losing, you will split the money – meaning you pay the winner.
  • 21: The total score is 21.
  • Blackjack: An Ace with any of these: J, Q, K, or 10. (If the dealer has Blackjack, you lose).
  • Bust: When a player’s total score goes over 21, it’s considered a bust.

Example:

If you have 9 and 6 in your hand, the total score is 9 + 6 = 14 => you can’t reveal cards yet because you need to be at least 16 years old, so you should draw another card and unfortunately get a 10, making the total score 14 + 10 = 24, which means you bust.

  • Payback: If you have 21 points but still draw and lose, you will pay back most of the players involved.

Calculating points in Blackjack

  • Number cards: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are normal point cards.
  • J, Q, K cards are worth 10 points.
  • Ace (A) is counted as follows:
  • 1 Ace is worth 10 or 11.
  • Two or more Aces are considered Double Aces.
  • 1 Ace with a total of 3 or more cards in hand is counted as 1.

Scenario: At the start, if players draw specific cards, they can immediately reveal and win against the dealer (except if the dealer has a higher hand):

  • Double Aces: two Aces (Almost a guaranteed win).
  • Blackjack: if the dealer has Blackjack or Double Aces, you will lose.

Strength of cards in online Blackjack

Based on the total points of the cards, we classify the strength gradually as follows: Straight Flush => Three of a Kind => Full House => Pair => High Card.

Moreover, there is a special case where if the player has a Straight Flush/Three of a Kind, they will compare points with the dealer immediately.

If the dealer has a Straight Flush/Three of a Kind, they usually win unless the player has a higher point.

For example, when playing online, you don’t need to worry about these rules because the system will automatically calculate and provide extremely accurate and quick results for point comparison.

In general, people think that Three of a Kind is stronger than a Straight Flush, but that is not correct. In reality, the number of cards in these two situations is different.

Because Three of a Kind and Straight Flush are based on two cards first to determine the win, while Full House involves drawing an additional 3 cards to have 5 cards, so according to the process, Full House still ranks lower.
